Why Timing Matters for Tree Trimming in Utah

Utah's climate is unlike most of the country. We get real winters with hard freezes, dry desert-like summers, and a shoulder season that can throw storms at you well into May. That environment creates specific trimming windows that can make or break the health of your trees.

Trimming at the wrong time doesn't just waste money — it can stress the tree, invite disease, and in some cases permanently damage it. Here's when to act, and when to wait.

Late Winter / Early Spring: The Best Window

For most trees in Utah, late February through mid-March is the sweet spot. The tree is still dormant, so it's not actively growing and won't bleed sap excessively when cut. But spring growth is about to kick in — meaning the tree will heal quickly once it does break dormancy.

Benefits of late-winter trimming:

Summer Trimming: Do It, But Be Careful

Summer trimming is absolutely fine — and sometimes necessary. Broken branches, overgrowth near power lines, and limbs rubbing on your roofline don't wait for ideal conditions.

The key in Utah summers: avoid trimming during heat spikes above 95°F. Freshly pruned trees in extreme heat can suffer from sunscald or tip dieback. Early morning cuts on mild days are ideal. And keep trimming conservative — removing more than 25% of a tree's canopy in summer can severely stress it.

Fall: The Season to Avoid

Most arborists in Utah advise against heavy pruning in fall. Here's why: cutting stimulates new growth. New growth in fall doesn't have time to harden before the first freeze, leaving tender new shoots vulnerable to frost damage. You end up doing more harm than good.

Light cleanup of dead branches is fine. Major trimming should wait.

Emergency Trimming: Whenever You Need It

Storm damage, fallen limbs, or anything threatening safety — those situations don't follow a seasonal calendar. If a branch is hanging over your roof after a windstorm, call us. Emergency service is available year-round. Delaying a dangerous situation is never the right call.
